Cerebral Palsy
With the right support, children with cerebral palsy can achieve more than you might imagine.
What is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of permanent movement and posture disorders caused by damage to the developing brain, usually before or during birth. It is the most common physical disability in childhood. CP affects muscle tone, movement, and motor skills — though it can also affect speech, cognition, and sensory processing depending on the area of the brain affected.
Cerebral palsy is not progressive — the brain injury does not worsen over time. However, the effects on the body can change as a child grows. Early and ongoing therapy is essential to help children develop maximum independence and quality of life.
What parents often notice
- Floppy or stiff muscle tone from birth
- Delayed motor milestones — rolling, sitting, crawling, walking
- Asymmetrical movement — favouring one side of the body
- Difficulty with fine motor tasks — grasping, feeding, drawing
- Abnormal gait or walking pattern
- Difficulty with speech or feeding
- Muscle spasms or tightness
- Poor balance and coordination
Important: If you recognise several of these signs in your child, it does not mean they definitely have Cerebral Palsy. Only a professional assessment can provide clarity. The earlier you seek an evaluation, the better.
