What is Milestone Delays?
Developmental milestones are skills that most children can do by a certain age — like smiling, sitting, walking, or saying their first words. A milestone delay occurs when a child is significantly behind their peers in reaching one or more of these markers. Delays can occur in gross motor, fine motor, speech and language, cognitive, or social-emotional development.
Not every delay is a cause for alarm — children develop at different rates. But persistent or significant delays are worth investigating early. A professional assessment can identify whether a delay is a normal variation or the sign of an underlying condition that would benefit from support.
