When is a child considered constipated?
A child is constipated when stools are hard, painful or infrequent — typically fewer than 3 per week — or when the child strains, withholds, or passes large stools that hurt. Exclusively breastfed babies can normally go several days without stooling. See a pediatrician if constipation lasts over 2 weeks, causes pain or bleeding, or begins in early infancy.

Understanding
What Causes Constipation in Children?
Functional constipation — the pain-withholding cycle after one hard, painful stool (over 90% of cases)
Diet low in fibre and fluids; excess milk after age 1
Toilet-training pressure or fear of school toilets
Change of routine — travel, new school, new home
Cow's-milk protein intolerance in some infants
Rarely, medical causes like hypothyroidism or Hirschsprung disease — which is what we screen for
Our approach
How We Care for Your Child at Siraa Health
Break the pain cycle first
A child who has been hurt by hard stool will hold it in, making the next one harder. Softening stool completely — for long enough — is step one, and stopping treatment too early is the commonest reason it 'comes back'.
Rule out the rare causes
A focused history and examination excludes the uncommon medical causes; tests only when findings suggest them.
Food and fluid that actually work
Practical fibre targets from an Indian kitchen — fruits, vegetables, whole grains — plus the right fluid intake and milk limits for age.
Toilet routine and confidence
Scheduled, unhurried toilet sits after meals, a footstool for position, and zero punishment or pressure — the behavioural half that syrups can't do.

Questions
What parents usually ask us
My baby hasn't passed stool for 3 days — is that constipation?+
Not necessarily. Exclusively breastfed babies can normally go 3–7 days between soft stools once past the first weeks. Constipation is about hard, painful stools — not just the gap. A comfortable baby passing soft stool, however infrequently, is usually fine.
Are stool softeners safe for children?+
Yes. Osmotic laxatives prescribed by a pediatrician are safe for extended use in children and are not habit-forming. The bigger mistake is stopping too soon — treatment usually continues for weeks to months after stools normalise so the withholding habit fully breaks.
Why does my child hide to pass stool in a nappy but refuse the toilet?+
This is classic stool withholding with toilet anxiety, not defiance. It follows painful stools or toilet-training pressure. The fix is softening stools so nothing hurts, then rebuilding toilet confidence gradually — pressure makes it worse.
Can constipation cause soiled underwear?+
Yes — it's called overflow soiling. Liquid stool leaks around a hard mass the child can't feel or control. It looks like diarrhea or 'laziness' but is actually severe constipation, and it resolves with proper treatment. Never punish it.
