What temperature is a fever in children?
A temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher is a fever in children. Most fevers are caused by viral infections and settle within 3–4 days. See a pediatrician urgently if your child is under 3 months old, the fever crosses 104°F, lasts beyond 3 days, or your child is unusually drowsy or breathing fast.

Questions
What parents usually ask us
How long does viral fever last in kids?+
Most viral fevers in children last 3–4 days. The fever may spike and fall in cycles, which is normal. If fever persists beyond 3 days, is very high, or your child seems unusually unwell, see a pediatrician to rule out dengue, typhoid or a bacterial infection.
Should I alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen?+
Not routinely. Alternating increases the risk of dosing errors. Paracetamol alone, dosed correctly by weight, controls most fevers. Use combinations only if your pediatrician specifically advises it for your child.
Can teething cause fever?+
Teething can cause a slightly raised temperature, but it does not cause true fever above 100.4°F (38°C). If your teething baby has a real fever, assume an infection and treat it as such.
Can I bathe my child during fever?+
Yes. A lukewarm bath or sponge can make your child more comfortable. Avoid cold water — it causes shivering, which actually raises body temperature.
What should my child eat during fever?+
Offer light, easy foods — dal, khichdi, curd rice, fruit, soups — and plenty of fluids. Don't force food; a reduced appetite for a few days is normal and recovers on its own.
When is a fever an emergency?+
Any fever in a baby under 3 months, fever above 104°F, a seizure, stiff neck, breathing difficulty, a non-blanching rash, or a child who is very drowsy or not drinking — these need a doctor immediately.
